The Fairlight Computer Musical Instrument
I was fortunate to have been able to attend Ball State University during 1979/1980. A long time friend, Bob Brown, convinced me to attend and take courses in recording engineering, led by Dr. Cleve Scott. Those were great times and as a result of Dr. Scott's renown in electronic music, the folks from Fairlight brought one of their systems to our studio. Dr. Scott was kind enough to let us all see a demo and I was certainly impressed. I grabbed a few brochures and managed to hang on to them all these years. Much to my pleasant surprise while listening to the Beyond Jazz channel(72) on XM Satellite Radio, they were playing an interview with Herbie Hancock. Herbie had recently donated a few items to the Smithsonian, among them a Fairlight Computer Musical Instrument. The links to the left display scans I made of the brochures as well as provide more information about the Fairlight CMI, Herbie Hancock, XM Radio and Dr. Scott. Note that Fairlight thanked Dr. Scott on page 3 of their Music Composition Language brochure. Special thanks to my friend Bob Brown for convincing me to enroll at Ball State, Dr. Cleve Scott who although I only had the pleasure of his wisdom for less than a year still motivates me to this day and Russ Davis of XM Radio Beyond Jazz for bringing back the memories.
